Frequently Asked Questions

New Users Usually Ask…

  • » What does Tworl do exactly?
  • Tworl lets you randomly connect to other tworl members using AIM (and in the future, other chat programs too). After a connection is made, both participants are shown a chat information page that contains the two member profiles, member mashup data that compares and contrasts the two connected members, the option to rate each other, and a map showing where both participants are located.
  • » How much does it cost to join?
  • Kind of like OJ, tworl is free (surprise!).
  • » Will Tworl ever spam or spim me, sell my information, or my kidneys?
  • Absolutely not. Tworl values your privacy and will never ever spim or spam you, sell your information, or anything else along those lines.
  • » Can I choose to stop receiving Tworl chat invitations once I sign up?
  • Yes. You can stop receiving Tworl chat invitations by clicking on the “edit your account settings” link on your account page and un-checking the “allow users to tworl me” box. Once this is unchecked, you will no longer receive any incoming Tworl chat invitations or phone calls from Jessica Alba asking for sex.
  • » Can I receive a Tworl chat invitation even if I’m not a member of Tworl?
  • No. Tworl believes strongly in user privacy and only searches through our database of registered Tworl members who have asked to participate. This database is the same one that is used to determine who gets into heaven.

Sending Tworl Chats

  • » After the tworl search completes and I click the "start tworl chat" button, the AIM window opens with the Tworl chat invitation message…. what do I do next?
  • A lot of people find this confusing… When the AIM window pops up with the Tworl chat invitation, it has NOT been sent to the recipient. In order to start the chat, you will need to press "Send" in your AIM window so that the message will be sent to the recipient.
  • » Okay, I sent the Tworl chat invitation, but the other person doesn’t respond… what gives?
  • In most cases, the person you’ve sent the tworl chat invitation to has walked away from their computer but has not yet gone into an “idle” state (which would have excluded them from our search results). The best advice we can really give you is to just mark them as unresponsive, pick up the pieces of your broken heart, and try searching again.
  • » Help! I lost the link to the tworl chat information page before I sent it to the person tworl connected me to. Can I get it back?
  • Yes. If you log in and navigate to your account page (click the "Edit John Doe’s Account" link in the upper right of any page), there will be a list of "Recent Tworls" on the right side of the page. The link you are looking for should be in this list. If you want to resend the tworl chat invitation, click on the username of the person whom you would like to re-send the invitation to, and then click on the "resend tworl invitation" link on the next page.

Receiving Tworl Chats

  • » I received a tworl chat invitation, but I don’t want to click on a link in an instant message. Is there a way for me to view the tworl chat information page without clicking on the link in the tworl chat invitation I received?
  • Yes, if you log in and navigate to your account page (click the “Edit John Doe’s Account” link in the upper right of any page), there will be a list of “Recent Tworls” on the upper right side of the page. The link to the tworl chat information page you are looking for should be in this list.
  • » Why have I never received an incoming Tworl chat invitation from someone else?
  • Try checking out these questions to see if your AIM is properly configured for receiving tworl chat invitations. If your settings seem to be okay, then it’s likely that either our computer just hasn’t selected you as a recipient yet, or it’s busy looking at porn on the internet like everyone else.
  • » If I log on to AIM with my mobile phone/device, will I still receive incoming Tworl chat invitations?
  • No. We do not include those that are logged on to AIM with a mobile device in our searches because we feel like cell phones are for more important purposes such as distracting you while you are driving.

Accepting Tworl Chats

  • » How do I formally “accept” a tworl chat?
  • The person who sends the tworl chat invitation will always automatically accept the chat without doing anything. In order for the person who receives the tworl chat invitation to formally “accept” the chat, they will need to view the chat information page while logged in and click on the “accept this chat” button on the page.
  • » How long will a tworl chat remain in my tworl history?
  • If both participants of a tworl chat have accepted, the chat will never be removed from either member’s tworl history. If both participants have not accepted a tworl chat after 48 hours, it will be removed from both member’s tworl history.

Rating Tworl Chats

  • » Why can’t I see the box on the Tworl chat information page to rate the person I’m talking to?
  • In order for chatting members to rate each other, both will have to first formally “accept” the tworl chat invitation (see this question on how to formally accept a chat). Once both participants of a Tworl chat have formally accepted the chat, the rating box will appear. If it’s still not visible after both participants have accepted, our programming skills clearly need some work.
  • » How does the rating system work?
  • Once both participants have formally accepted a tworl chat, a rating box will become available visible on the tworl chat information page. Once this box is available, you can roll over the stars to submit your rating of the other person (which can be anywhere from 1 to 5 stars).

Marking People as "Unresponsive"

  • » What happens when someone presses the “unresponsive” button on the tworl chat information page?
  • If a member gets flagged as “unresponsive” 5 times in a row without accepting a chat invitation or visiting tworl.com at some point in between, their “allow users to tworl me” setting will automatically be set to “no” (i.e. they won’t receive any more incoming tworl chat invitations) and they will receive an email notifying them of the change. If this happens to you, you can always log into your account and click on “edit your account settings” to turn it back on.
  • » Why do you guys say that flagging a user as unresponsive helps improve the Tworl community?
  • Flagging unresponsive users helps to improve Tworl by:
    • Helping us to not bother members who are no longer interested in participating.
    • Increasing the quality of the available Tworl community as well as the overall quality of your Tworl connections by reducing the number of unresponsive people you are connected to.
  • » Why did the “allow users to tworl me” flag in my account get automatically flipped to “No”?
  • Please check out this question.

Configuring AIM for Tworl

  • » What version of AIM do I need to use Tworl?
  • You can receive Tworl invitations with all versions of AIM, and just about any third party client, including GAIM, Trillian, meebo, etc. Sending Tworl invitations, however, requires the authentic AIM program from AIM.com. Sending Tworl invitations will work with just about all versions of AIM from AIM.com and has been verified to work for sure on AIM versions 5.0 to 5.9.6089. When using AIM version 6.0 and above to send an invitation, pressing the “Start Tworl Chat” button will result in an empty AIM window popping up rather than the normal window with the Tworl chat invitation message already filled in and ready for you to send. If this happens, simply allow the chat info page to load, and copy-and-paste the Tworl invitation message from the “Need the Tworl Invitation Message” box that appears on the bottom of the chat info page, and then send this to the recipient. Please also see the next question for similar help, or contact us at admin@tworl.com for additional support.
  • » Can I use GAIM, Trillian, or any other third party AIM clients with Tworl?
  • Third party clients such as GAIM or Trillian will allow you to receive Tworl invitations like normal, but will not allow you to send invitations like normal. More specifically, when using an authentic AIM program from AIM.com to send an invitation, pressing the “Start Tworl Chat” button will cause an AIM window to automatically pop-up with the Tworl chat invitation message all ready for you to send. When using GAIM, Trillian or any other third-party AIM programs, however, this AIM window will not automatically pop-up. Instead, you will need to do the following:
    1. Press the “Start Tworl Chat” button
    2. Allow the chat info page to load
    3. Manually open an instant messenger window in your third-party program to the person whom you are connected. The screenname you should send the message to will be available in the “Screennames” box on the chat info page.
    4. Copy-and-paste the Tworl chat invitation message from the chat info page to the AIM window and send it to the person to whom you were connected. The Tworl chat invitation message to send that person will be available for copying-and-pasting from the “Need the Tworl Invitation Message” box also on the chat info page.
Please also see the previous question for similar help, or contact us at admin@tworl.com for additional support. We apologize to all you Trillian and GAIM users (we love these programs too), and hope to find a way to make these clients work soon.
  • » How do I configure my AIM program so that I can receive incoming tworls?
  • You will need to check that your AIM privacy settings don’t prevent people from seeing you when you are online. To do this, open AIM and press F3 (or go to My AIM > Edit Options > Edit Preferences). Click on the “Privacy” option in the left menu and ensure that you have one of the following two options selected:
    • Allow all users to contact me
    • Block the users below
Note: if you have selected any of the following options instead, you will NOT be able to receive incoming tworl chat invitations:
    • Allow only users on my buddy list
    • Allow only the users below
    • Block all users
    • Block internet users only

Miscellaneous

  • » When I try to sign up, it says the max number of beta users has been reached… how can I get in?
  • We are currently in the process of performing a limited public beta testing of the site. If you attempt to sign up and there are no accounts available, please enter your email address into the form and we will contact you as soon as we are ready to support more members. We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause, and assure you that we release more accounts as often as possible.
  • » Is Tworl planning on supporting any other chat programs besides AIM?
  • Yes, we are hoping to soon support other chat programs such as Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk/Jabber, MSN, and maybe even Skype.
